You know how to tell when a photographer is bored? It’s when even the squirrel fights look choreographed.

The breeze is like a slinking kit.
It moves and stops and waits crouching.
It springs forward to catch its helpless prey
With icy teeth only to release it like a flopping fish
That is thrown back with a splash
And is hooked again,
Or like a mouse that runs pell mell
Back and forth between the paws that bat it like a birdie.
The gust of wind pounces on its kitten,
Opens up its reddened maw,
Swallows whole what the breeze has caught,
And then recedes,
Leaving once again the gentle breath of air,
That cat like licks the tousled tops of trees and my hair.
Sometimes strange things happen in my life, maybe that’s why some people don’t quite understand me. For one thing, I believe people should slow down and enjoy life, for two, people should have a sense of humor. Even if it is a strange one like mine is…
So anyways… I have this banana that likes to follow me around sometimes when I am traveling and likes to get me in trouble. Not sure why I put up with it however sometimes the banana has a good idea for a shot, and we all know that making the banana angry is not the best thing to do. One must always, Obey the Banana!
Here is a perfect example of the trouble a traveling banana can cause. They say let sleeping dogs lie, I would suggest this should also cover sleeping elephant seals.
What was supposed to be a simple snapshot of a sleeping elephant seal turned into a little more due to this evil banana that had other thoughts, just look at that expression, he is thinking evil thoughts!

His idea of fun was to go over and wake up the sleeping seal.
At first the seal was a little mad about being woke up, that soon turned to confusion as the seal attempting to figure out why this little yellow creature was doing standing on her tail, I have no idea how to tell a girl seal from a boy seal. However after introductions they seemed to get along fine.

Of course after watching this bonding of a seal and a banana which by the way is against all laws of nature, I just had to ask them both to pose for a quick snapshot since no one would believe this story without pictures. ok, on three everyone, 1, 2, Smile, 3 Awwwww

Always remember… Obey the Banana!
Some people have been asking to see some of the images from my last Photo Safari, so here are a couple from the Big Sur area.

So don’t ask me Dave
why do you shoot?
(Dave) why did you go digital?
Why must you live out the pictures that you take?
Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I grab my Nikon and shoot all night long
It’s a family tradition!

One thing about blogs that has always made be crazy was the fact that it was hard if not impossible to display large files in such a way that people can view the details of the image. Screen width and image theft are the two reasons most pictures are so hard to see.
As you already might know, starting with Photoshop CS3 you could export your large images to Zoomify and it would automatically tile your image, create your folders and also create your HTML code so viewers could zoom in on your image from your website.
For those of you that do not use Photoshop CS3 and newer you can still use Zoomify since they offer a free stand alone version. You can get that HERE if you need it.
However, the problem up till now has been a way to view Zoomify exports from within WordPress. This is no longer a problem.
Click on the below image to be able to zoom and pan for a closer look.

By using the WordPress plugin called “Shadowbox JS” you can configure your Zoomify page to display from within WordPress as easy as cooking a TV Dinner.
You can download it here by clicking this link: http://sivel.net/wordpress/shadowbox-js/
There are other ways you can use Shadowbox JS in your WordPress site however for this post I will stick with using it to display your Zoomify pages.
Yes, I am about to tell you how to do it. Coding and all… However you will need to click continue…

Took a few days off at the beginning of the week and took a short drive to Panguitch Lake up in Utah. What a gorgeous place to spend a few days.
For those of you that are like me and have problems trying to pronounce “Panguitch” and easy way to remember is Panguitch rhymes with sandwich.
Panguitch Lake is known primarily as a fishing destination. In fact, the earliest known use of Panguitch Lake was as a fishery by Paiute Indians. Very appropriately, the name Panguitch means “big fish” in the Paiute language. The lake is famous for its plentiful trout. Anglers will find rainbow, brook, cutthroat, and brown trout thriving in its cool waters. In the winter, ice fishing is very popular on the lake.
So if you want to escape the Vegas heat for a few days, maybe even do some fishing, check out Panguitch Lake. The 4 hour ride is totally worth it!

Answer: You Don’t!
Last Thursday I had a minor medical issue that required me to spend some time in the hospital. They called it a mild heart attack, I thought of it as a new photo opportunity.

My attempts to get the nurse agree to a short photo shoot was met with a glare then a sneer, I guess some people just don’t appreciate a creative mind.
In any case, I am fine and will be getting back into the swing of things soon, so keep your eye on this blog as I have several events coming up this weekend that will be posted here.
This is the beginning of a new series I am putting together called “Beauty in the Desert”

Red Barrel Cactus
How often have you heard that you should “stop and smell the roses”? More than a few times I would think however how often do you really look around you at the beauty of your surroundings?
No matter where you are, the tropics, desert, mountains or even the city, take a moment, stop and look at the beauty around you.
